The Namibian U18 Fistball national team arrived in Spain late Saturday evening. They will participate in the U18 World Cup which will start today 21 July 2010. Namibia will be in action on Thursday for the first time. This will be a though day for the Namibian team since they will be playing 4 games in sweltering heat with a high humidity. Three of the games will be against title favourites Brazil, Austria and Switzerland.

The last game will be against fellow fistball minnows Chile and although the Namibian team will have their work cut out they stand a chance to win the game. On Friday the action continues when Namibia meet defending champions Germany, Italy and Catalonia/Spain.

Fistball U18 National team travels to the World championships

The last round of Fistball league games was held over the weekend. Exciting Fistball action was guaranteed as the teams in the first and second division fight for the all important top spot on the log. The first placed teams automatically qualify for the final play-off match that will decide the championship which is scheduled to take place on 18 September 2010.

SKW 2 turned out to be the team of the day in Nationalleague A. They won all their matches. However this late challenge was not enough to topple SKW 1 from top spot. The defending champions will meet either SKW 2 or Cohen FC 1 who will play for the second spot in the final by way of a qualifying game.

There was no stopping Cohen FC 3 in the Nationalleague B. They easily won their remaining league matches thus holding on to the top spot on the log. Things turned more competitive further down the log were four teams still had a chance to take either second or third spot. Ramblers 1 and SFC 2 held their nerve and took second and third place respectively. Either of the two teams will now meet CFC3 in the championship final.

While the local Fistball season will only continue in September Namibia will participate in international competition. The U18 National team will depart to Spain where they will take part in the U18 World Championship . The tournament will be held in Lloret de Mar near Barcelona and will feature the likes of Germany, Switzerland and Brazil. While Namibia will only be travelling with a limited number of players, coach Andeas Minz has assembled a dedicated team that could prove the undoing for some of the more fancied sides. The World Championships will be played from 21 to 26 July 2010.

Log leaders drop points

(05.06.2010)

The third meeting of the Fistball championship which was held on the sport fields of Windhoek Ramblers produced a couple of surprise results. The log leaders of the National A and B league suffered their first defeats of the season.

The current league champions Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) 1 started the game against their club colleagues, SKW 2 as favourites but soon found themselves trailing by 3:1 sets. The managed to regroup and came back strongly and equalized. In the decisive set SKW 2 however showed a gritty resolve which allowed them to win the set convincingly with 11:4 points. SKW 1 however remains top of the log, three points clear of SKW 3 with Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) 1 trailing far behind in third place.

CFC 3, log leaders in the National league B, suffered their first defeat of the 2010 championship campaign at the hands of a young and motivated SFC 1 side. The Swakopmund team however remains in second spot on the log one point behind Ramblers 1. Ramblers 1 did not manage to inch closer to the top of the table since they did not have their full squad available due to injury and thus could not take advantage of the log leaders slip up.

With an impressive series of wins the U14 team of Cohen FC managed to draw level on points with the SFC at the top of the log. The Swakopmund team did not deliver on their potential and narrowly keep top spot in the league as they have won more sets. SKW remain in third spot.

The increased investment in youth development by Namibia’s Fistball clubs is also bearing fruit. All players nominated for the coveted Player of the day award were under 18 years of age. The eventual winners Erik Kolb and Nikolai Hof from the Swakopmund based SFC Sport Club are participating in their first full championship season.

The next round of league games is scheduled for 10 July and will be hosted by Cohen FC. This will be the last event before the U18 national team will depart for Spain to participate in the U18 Fistball World Cup.

Fistball league continues

The sport ground of the Ramblers Club will be a hive of activity on Saturday when the third round of the Namibian Fistball league is hosted by the club. Fistball pundits will need to get up early with the first games set to start at 8.00 when the teams of the U14 league take on each other.

The current log leaders of the U14 league, SFC Sport Club from Swakopmund, will need to be vary of their competition. During the last league outing they lost against an ever improving Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) side and are only three points in front of Cohen FC who will be aiming to replace the SFC at the top of the points ladder.

Excitement is also guaranteed in the National league B were the first placed Cohen FC 3 is scheduled to play the Swakopmund sides participating in the competition. Both SFC 1 and SFC 2 have shown strong skill and will be hard to beat. Second placed Ramblers 1 will on the other hand have a quiet day. They will play one game against bottom of the log SKW 3. A win will allow Ramblers to tighten their grip on one of the top three log positions.

It is business as usual for SKW 1. The team has dominated proceedings in the National league A with second placed SKW 2 already five points adrift from the top spot. Things are not likely to change although Cohen FC 1 might challenge the SKW 1 supremacy when the two teams meet in the last game of the day.  CFC1 have a number of talented players that can surprise they opposition on a good day.

The last game of the day is a special treat for the spectators. The U18 National team will play an exhibition match against an SKW team. The match will allow the U18 team to get additional match practice before their departure to Spain where they will participate in the U18 World Cup from 22 to 25 July 2010.

Exciting Fistball Action (24.04.2010)

Second round of league matches held

After the second round of games in the Namibian fistball league the SKW 1 remains unbeaten in the National league A with the Cohen FC 3 regaining first spot in the National league B. The games took place on Saturday on the SKW Fistball fields. SKW 1 was not troubled by their opponents winning all their matches comfortably.

They remain top of the log with SKW 2 already 5 points behind. The SKW second stringers struggled at times but did not succumb to archrivals Cohen FC 1. While Cohen FC did not manage to climb up the log the team should take heart from their performance and has laid the foundation for a charge on the top two teams.

Things went down to the wire in the National league B. Windhoek Ramblers 1 started the day in first place closely followed by league favourites Cohen FC 3. After showing strong performances throughout the day both teams met late in the day to determine the log leader. The scores were close in nearly every set with both teams putting up a-never-say-attitude in windy playing conditions. In the end the more experienced CFC 3 side walked off the field with the win and first place in the league. Things however remain close in the National league B with third placed SFC 1 not far off the log leaders.

The u/14 games were once again quite popular with a number of parents supporting the teams. The Swakopmund SFC side did not repeat their dominant performance from the first round of games held in March. They lost against a spirited SKW side but still managed to remain top of the log.

The next event scheduled on the Fistball calendar is Namibia’s only Indoor Fistball tournament which will take place in Swakopmund on 15 May 2010.

Successful start to league (13.3.2010)

Ramblers Fistball are the surprise log leaders in the National B league

The first round of Fistball league games were played in windy conditions in Swakopmund over the weekend. While there were no upsets in the National A league with Sportklub Windhoek (SKW) 1 winning all its games, Windhoek Ramblers emerged as the surprise log leaders in the National B league.

The day started off with the games in the U14 league where league newcomers SFC, gave an impressive debut managing to win all their games. Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) is in second spot on the log with SKW holding third spot. The games were one of the highlights of the day, enjoying a large following. The cup for player of the day in this league went to Luca Fink of SFC who made a big impact in attack and defence for the Swakopmund team.

National A league defending champions SKW 1 underlined their dominance of Namibian Fistball once again. They managed to win all their games in straight sets to go top of the log. The SKW second team is second after winning a couple of close games against archrivals Cohen FC. Their match against CFC 2 went down to the last ball with the game taking seven sets before being concluded.

Windhoek Ramblers 1 was in high spirits after becoming the log leaders in the National B league. They had to travel to Swakopmund one player short but showed a lot of determination and fighting spirit winning all their games on the day. In second place are last year’s league winners CFC 3 followed closely by Swakopmunds SFC 2.

The next big event on the Fistball calendar is the first preliminary draw of the Fistball Associations N$ ½ Million raffle. It will take place on 26 March 2010 with the second round of league games scheduled for 24 April 2010 in Windhoek.

Fistball league set to start this weekend (09.03.2010)

Fistball action will hit Swakopmund this weekend with the first round of league games scheduled to take place at the SFC Sport Club on Saturday. Altogether 14 teams will travel to the coast to participate at the event.

This year will see only four teams participating in the National league A, Namibia’s top Fistball league. Having lost a number of key players the SFC Sport Club had to withdraw their team. However competition among the remaining teams remains tight with SKW 1, SKW 2 and Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) 1 equally capable of playing quality Fistball.

The administrators of Fistball in Namibia will however take heart from developments in the other leagues. Prospects in the National league B are rosy. Defending champions CFC 3 will be joined by a team from SKW and two teams from Windhoek Ramblers. The SFC Sport Club has also registered two teams for the seasons competition in this category up by one from last year. The Swakopmund Club will also participate in the U14 league this season. The competition was only established during 2009 with SKW and CFC as the only clubs participating.

The first match day for the 2010 Fistball league starts what promises to be an eventful year for the Fistball fraternity since Namibia will be sending an U18 team to the World championships scheduled for July 2010 in Spain. Furthermore the intercontinental club world championship will be held in Windhoek during October.

Successful start to the Fistball season (22.02.2010)

SKW and Cohen take home the cups

The Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) hosted a successful season opening Fistball tournament on Saturday. The SKW 1 emerged as winners in the Category A while CFC 3 took home the silverware in Category B.

Current league champion SKW 1 proved too strong for their opposition winning the category A without losing a match. In the final they met their club mates SKW 2 who could also not stop their winning streak. The final produced some good Fistball and ended with 3:0 sets in favour of SKW 1.
Category B regulars Windhoek Ramblers took the plunge and also entered a team in category A. They found the going though against their more experienced opposition but managed to steal a last minute draw in their match against CFC2.

Cohen FC underlined their dominance in the category B when they won the final with 3:0 sets against SKW 4. They added another cup to their trophy cabinet after already winning the cup and league titles during 2009. Reaching the final was a huge accomplishment for SKW 4. The team consisted out of retired Fistball players and first timers. SKW 3 managed to win the third place playoff against a spirited Swakopmund SFC side that had a number of u/14 players in its ranks.

A mini tournament for u/14 players was also held. Here the SKW team proved in good nick early in the season. The side won all its games. The matches had a big following of parents and spectators who were entertained by some exciting action.

Fistball players will converge on Swakopmund on 13 March 2010. The first league games of the 2010 season are scheduled to take place then at the SFC Sport Club.

Namibia Fistball concludes a successful year (27.10.2009)

Launch of fundraising initiative announced

A successful year concluded for Namibian Fistball on Saturday when the National cup was hosted at the SFC Sport Club in Swakopmund the same place on which the Fistball World converged in January this year to determine the best youth teams in the world. At the cup competition saw action in two categories. While category A catered for the more advanced teams, social, youth and ladies teams participated in category B.

Support from abroad. Martin Groegli, president of TSV Jona, Switzerland’s largest Fistball club, visited Namibia and decided to be part of the action over the weekend. Photo: Christian Knobloch

There were few surprises as to the winners. Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) 1 added more silverware to their cabinet with win in category A. They played a youthful and spirited side from Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) that pulled out all the stops against their counterparts. The teams fighting spirit was however not enough to win the cup as SKW did not let the pressure get to them in the decisive moments of the match. CFC however took home the cup in category B beating the home side from the SFC convincingly. The league champions proved to be the more balanced side while the young players in the SFC side struggled to handle the pressure of a final.

At the prize giving not only the teams of the day were rewarded. The outstanding players of the year were also honoured. Torsten Schmidt-Dumont, aged 16 and spiker for CFC was voted youth player of the years while the captain of SFC first team Christoph Kubirske was named senior player of the year for the second year running.

Michael Baas, president of the Fistball Association of Namibia (FAN) took the opportunity to announce the launch of a raffle with N$ 500 000 as the main prize. Tickets are on sale now. This initiative aims to raise funds for youth development programs which FAN plans to run and to support the travels of national teams to overseas tournaments in the coming years..

Fistball league champions crowned (21.10.09)

Next major international event to be hosted in Namibia in 2010

There were no surprises at the play offs for the Namibian Fistball league championships with the favourites taking the titles in the National league A and B on Saturday 26 September 2009. Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) 1 were the worthy winners in the top Namibian league while Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) 3 trounced their opponents to win the National league B.

SKW 1 had already qualified for the decisive match at the last round of league games after the finished the round robin stage of the league competition top of the log. The same applied to CFC 3 who also performed well over the entire season and were rewarded for their efforts by qualifying for the final without having to play a semifinal.

The day started well for the Swakopmund based teams who had travelled to Windhoek for the decisive games. SFC Sport Club 1 qualified for the final in style by beating SKW 2 by 4:1 sets. The Windhoek side never had enough firepower to overcome the SFC side and made a number of unforced errors at crucial times in the match.  SFC 2, the coastal team playing in the National league B, soon followed suit and also secured their place in the Final by beating Windhoek Ramblers by 4:0. The very experienced Swakopmund side was never troubled by Ramblers.

The final matches were a different story altogether. CFC 3 were not troubled by SFC 2 in the final of the National league B. The defending championships won in straight sets. Especially Spiker PV Steinkopff had a great day making few mistakes and exploiting the weaknesses in the Swakopmund defence. The game ended by 5:0 sets.

SFC 1 was left to rue another missed opportunity when they only managed to win one set in a match which was balanced for long periods. While the Swakopmund side only showed glimpses of their potential it was the clinical SKW 1 attack which left the SFC 1 no chance. Added to that, the SKW defence was rock solid. The match ended with 5:1 sets for the Windhoek team.

Prior to the games, Michael Baas, chairperson of the Fistball Association of Namibia announced that the Namibian National league A champion would host Club World Cup. At this event the best men’s and women’s club team from South America and Europe will play the best Namibian club side in order to determine the best club side in the world. The announcement comes in the wake of the hugely successful Youth World Cup held in Swakopmund in January 2009. While the participating teams still need to be announced the date has already been set. The Fistball Club World Cup will take place from 15 to 16 October 2010 in Windhoek.

Fistball league 2009 starts (13.03.2009)

After a rain interrupted season opening tournament Namibia’s Fistball league will kick off on Saturday. The Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) will be hosting the event on the Fistball fields of the SKW. Games will be played in two categories starting at 8.30 in the morning.

Five teams will be battling it out in the National A League which is Namibia’s premier Fistball competition. SKW 1 are the favourites having won the championship for twelve seasons in row. They will however face strong competition from the side representing SFC from Swakopmund. Also in the mix are CFC 1 who have a number of talented youngsters in their ranks. These players showed their skills at the Fistball Youth World Championships which were held in Swakopmund during January 2009.

The National B League will see six sides compete against each other this season. After participating with only one team in last year’s competition Ramblers will be fielding two teams this season. CFC 3 will however remain the favourites in this category with their proven mix of experienced players and young talented players. After a long absence the SFC has also entered a team in this league. A lot can be expected from the coastal side. They proved their worth by winning the last tournament of 2008. Additionally they can count on a pool of experienced players.

The day will conclude when the player of the day is chosen at a short ceremony in the evening which will be held in the clubhouse of the Cohen Fistball Club.
